Back to school teacher gift ideas!
With school fast approaching, this is the perfect time to think about a gift for your child's teacher. Our teachers are underpaid, overworked, swamped with unnecessary paperwork, and don't have big budgets to buy needed materials for their classroom.
Here are a few ideas....
1. Traditional~School supplies! Glue sticks, pencils, crayons, paper towels, tissues, markers, folders, construction paper, notebooks, rulers, etc. You can organize in a basket or gift bag!
2. Trendy~Make or buy a nice piece to honor the teacher for their classroom. Wreath made of crayons, artwork, plaques, etc. Chevron is super hot right now!
3. Other~
a. Flowers: "Of all the flowers, I pick you!"
b. Starbucks: "You're the best teacher, I love you a latte"
c. Candy: 100 Grand, Mounds, Smarties. Various sayings can accompany these and I'm sure there are more!

I love free stuff!
Who doesn't love free stuff? I know that I sure do :)
My childrens' dentist offers a free pizza buffet and $20 game card to Springfield's Incredible Pizza company every time the child has a no cavity visit. How cool is that?!
The whole family gets to attend. That is a crazy value for our family!!!
We went tonight and the dental assistants were holding baby Liam and he started chewing on a $20 game card, so the girls gave us another one! Amazing.

Doctors are frustrating!
Okay, we have an excellent, thorough (sometimes too thorough) pediatrician for our kids. Love her!
Buuuuuutttttttt, I am so so sick of a few things when it comes to care for our kids.
1. Them telling me I HAVE to bring my son in. This is particularly true of newborns/infants. I'm super worried about my baby's health anyway, but for them to say that I have to bring him in and it turns out to be nothing, just frustrates me.
2. Getting a prescription that I KNOW he will not take. My infant does not take oral medication. He lets it run out. He screams. We've tried everything, so he gets shots. They still make us have an additional prescription though.
3. Urgent Care...For the life of me, I dislike UC so much! Never an accurate diagnosis. Super rude staff usually. Probably because they're the B-list. I can't stand urgent care!
This is just a little rant, I have so much more to say on this topic, but unfortunately we're headed to an 8 A.M. appointment now. Ugh.

Best Way to Grill Ribs!
Step 1: Buy country ribs at the grocery store, farmer's market, or market. Good quality. Organic, free-range if possible in your area. There are websites to order from if you're truly concerned about how the animals are raised and what they're fed.
Step 2: Buy Memphis rub. Many brands out there for this. Simple.
Step 3: Put the ribs in an aluminum pan that will fit on your grill and season the heck out of them!
Step 4: Once your grill is ready, put the pan on for 1 hour.
You'll have fall off the bone ribs, that are juicy and tender :)

Thigh Workout-Firm, Tighten, Tone!
With exercise, eating healthier, and the It Works line (skinny wraps) you can firm, tighten, and tone your thighs.
A problem area for many women, your thighs can look better than ever!
1. Do 50 legs raises the four different ways at least 3 days per week.
a. Lay on your side, head resting on hand with elbow holding you up, gently raise your right leg, slowly, not too high.
b. Lay your head down and do the same for your inner thigh.
c. Repeat both ways with your left leg/thigh.
2. Jog, walk, or run at least 3 days per week. Just do something! It's easy to walk, mildly hard to jog, and harder to run. Get off the couch and do it!
3. Eat healthier! Replace those fries or chips with a yogurt or peach. Replace the bread basket or cheeseburger buns with a salad or lettuce.
4. Use skinny wraps on your thighs! https://jenniebrown.myitworks.com

Sick Kids=The Worst
I hate being sick, but I hate one thing more: My kids and husband being sick!
This week in my household:
1. Child G (5-years-old) had strep throat diagnosed Wednesday.
2. Child M (6-years-old) stubbed his toe and inevitably his big nail was hanging by a thread.
3. Child B (2.5-years-old) was diagnosed with strep throat and a double ear infection on Friday.
4. Child L (7-months-old) was diagnosed with strep throat and a single ear infection on Friday.
5. The husband had a migraine (not your typical migraine) all day Saturday, Sunday, and today. He vomits violently and wants to die. It's that bad, he also cries :(
6. Again with Child B (2.5-years-old) started vomiting with his horrible cough Sunday and today.
My throat's hurt all day, but I don't get added to the list because I'm the mom.
So, how was your weekend?

Romantic Beaches in Florida to Vacation
I love Florida, people always ask, "Why?", which actually surprises me. Yes, it's humid. Yes, there are old people. No different than Missouri, where I currently live. Having visited Florida around 18 times in my life thusfar, I have a pretty good idea of where to go for certain activities and what Florida has to offer.
Romantic Areas/Beaches
1. Siesta Key, FL
a. Located on the gulf side
b. Beautiful white cool sandy beaches with warmer water
c. Good dining
d. Best beach in Florida no matter why you're visiting
e. More affordable hotels
2. Key West, FL
a. So much to do in Key West
b. The drive is beautiful, but prone to gridlock
c. Quaint spots to walk, hand in hand, for a nightly stroll or shopping
d. Fine dining opportunites
e. More expensive hotels
3. Sanibel Key, FL
a. 15 miles of beaches
b. Great for shell collecting
c. Same gulf beaches as Siesta Key
d. Tons of dining options
e. Beautiful Lighthouse
Here's to Florida! I hope I live there one day.

Ebay. What it is and what it is not.
Ebay.
What it is.
Good to buy things cheaply, good to buy "cheap" things, easy to use, you can find about anything on there, you find things you're not looking for on there.
Example: I searched "diapers" and one result was a picture with a woman only wearing a diaper. Ew.
What it is not.
Good for making money (typically)-from the fees to the cheap people to the lying sellers/buyers-it's not so great.
In favor of the seller. I've been on both ends and the buyer's end always wins.
Going to change.

Bowling!!!
So my husband have only been bowling 1 time in our 6 year marriage. Is that sad? Seems sad to me. I think that bowling as a family activity is dying. That also saddens me. I don't know why. Anyway, Garrett and I took our 2 oldest boys bowling tonight at a family friendly, Christian-owned alley called Lighthouse Lanes. They have glow in the dark bowling! I mean, too cool!
The boys had fun, as did we! It's definitely going to be an activity we try to do more :)

Wear those kids out!
I love love love being a SAHM. It is hard some days, especially when the kiddos are so hyper!!
Here's what I suggest: WEAR THEM OUT!
Here's how you do it: go to the park early like 9 or before, stay 1 1/2-2 hours, eat lunch around 11:30, then they will be chill to watch a movie or actually nap from 12:30-3PM. Trust me, I do this daily :)

You're a Father, but are you a "daddy"?
Biological DNA does not make someone a father. I have zero, none, non-existent relationship with my biological dad. I'm all right with it now, but I feel for those who grow up without a dad. It typically results in lots of problems for that little girl or boy.
My husband is a good dad. He loves our boys so much. He is pretty hard on them at times, but you can tell it's out of love and he wants them to grow up to be the most productive beings possible. It is very cute to hear "daddy!" out of any one of our boys. :) They love to wrestle with him, read with him, and do any outdoor activity with him. Here's to you, babe! You're the bestest :)

Making money while being a stay-at-home mom!
There are many ways to make money as a stay-at-home mom (SAHM).
I've HEAVILY researched and I compiled a list of legit and a list of not-so-good ideas.
Good/Legit:
1. Babysitting (Simple) The questions is: "Do you have the patience for one, two, or three plus more kids at home?"
2. Selling
a. Selling on websites such as: www.craigslist.org, www.ebay.com, or www.etsy.com.
b. Scouring yard sales and sites mentioned about and selling to resale shops.
c. Becoming a distributor of products like Arbonne, Avon, It Works, Nerium, etc. etc. etc.
3. Blog-It is easy, but actually making moolah is a challenge I'm finding.
4. Medical coding/billing. If you have a degree...
Bad/Ehhh:
1. Survey online. Most are scams. If they aren't, it take a billion years (exaggeration) to get a paycheck.
2. Cleaning houses. Like you have time to clean someone else's house for $8/hour.

To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate...
My husband and I started out saying, "no vaccinations whatsoever". Since then, we allow some vaccinations. I'm clearly in the middle on this argument. I mean, who knows what all is in that injection they'll receive??? But then I read articles like the one below and I think that it is better to have the vaccines. Thoughts? More to come...

Summer when you're a SAHM (stay-at-home mom)
When you have young children, especially more than one, summers can be filled with so much fun and adventure. They can also be filled with a lot of time-outs, yelling, and frustration. I don't have it all figured out, but here's what I deduce.
1. Have fun! Let them get dirty, go on adventures, be silly. They will truly only be this age once, enjoy it. :)
2. It's okay if you're excited for August and school to begin again. I know I am! Kids are really annoying, arrogant, and rude a lot of the time. We have to raise and train them to be better in later life.

Giving...
My cute nephew and two nieces request items for them to donate instead of birthday presents. Such a good idea and paying it forward, wow, impressed!
Examples: Zoe: Socks to give to girls' home, Eli: Boxes of cereal to donate to boys' home, Ayn: Toys to a local daycare
My son, Gibson, returned some of his birthday toys for money and then he went to www.worldvision.org with me and chose to donate clothing/blankets to needy people in another country.
Beautiful.

Car shows!!!
I love car shows. My husband is definitely a "car guy". :)
Went to a close one today in Springfield, MO. Plenty of 50-60's model stuff which is great. We aren't interested in 70's and up.
More of the "rat rod" style is our preference. :)
Head to another show in the K.C. area in August. It's called Greaserama! Head to: www.lospunkrods.com and check out what past shows had to offer!
Here are a few pics from a couple of different car shows in the last few years.

2. Ice them with frosting once they were completely cooled
3. Put candy corns standing up
4. Sprinkled green sprinkles on them :)

Lifelong Missouri resident-Pros and cons of moving to and living in Missouri
I live in Missouri, in the middle of the United States. Some things are good here and some things are not so good. I've compiled a list for people who have never been here and are considering moving here.
Pros:
1. All seasons-rainy, cool spring
hot and humid summer
cool, leaves-changing fall
cold, snowy winter
2. Missouri has some naturally beautiful areas. The hills with the trees are pretty amazing in the fall with the leaves changing.
3. Lots of outdoor activities such as: hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, rock climbing, parks, pools, etc. We have it all!!
4. Schools are good, some great, some not so great. I'm in the middle on the schools here. I went to Kickapoo High School, where Brad Pitt went! It was a great school, but in the Springfield school district there are a bunch of lower income schools. There are also a lot of rural low-income schools.
5. Downtown. It's great for college kids that are wanting to party. It's becoming a little better for families, but not good yet.
6. Farmer's markets. There are at least 5 in the area on the weekends. This is exciting!!!
7. Lots of cheap and free kids activities. From free movies in the summer to discounted bowling to kids eat free nights, there are lots of opportunities.
Cons:
1. Weather is unpredictable. It snowed in May this year (2013). That is horrible!
2. Not a lot of diversity.
3. Downtown needs work. More family friendly opportunities needed.
4. Need more restaurant choices. There are a BUNCH of fast food and fast food Chinese options. Need more fine dining that is quality fine dining. Ours are lacking.
5. Housing is pretty affordable. Definitely compared to the rest of the country.
6. Low crime. Although break-ins are becoming more and more common.

Babies...
I love babies. Specifically my babies. I used to love all babies and kids when I was young up until my twenties. After my second child, I lost my passion, I'd say for all babies. I still want kids to have enough to eat, be clean, etc. etc. etc. I don't know why this is. Probably something I need to work on.

just like you
I entitled my blog "somewhere in the middle mom", because there are very few subjects that I am going to say, "it's like this, no other choice". Here are some examples:
1. Organic eating: I would love to eat all organic, but cannot afford it so there are other ways. I love to eat out. Very few organic only restaurants around these parts, so we are not going to stop eating out.
2. Weight: I want to be healthy, in shape, thin, blah blah blah. I will not give up desserts. They bring me joy, so why would I. I am no longer the size 2 I used to be, and I'm okay with that.
3. Music: Love all kinds, enough said.
4. Debt: I will not be a slave to credit card companies. But, there are the occasional vacations and such that will go on a credit card that will be paid off ASAP.
5. Cooking: I love to cook/bake, but love to eat out. We will not always eat at home and that is okay!
More to come...
